Where to See Dolphins in Oahu

During your vacation in Hawaii, you might be inclined to see wild dolphins in the local oceans of Oahu. But you might be unsure of where the best spots are to do so and what your best options are. Here is all the information you will need to have an almost guaranteed chance to see dolphins in the wild, from the best locations, to tours and other tips for observing respectfully.

Dolphin Habitats

There are many locations that are inhabited by the many local dolphin species. These habitats are typically in more tropical, warm-temperate climates. Depending on the time of day, they can be found either in deep waters or shallow bay areas.

The reason Hawaiian spinner dolphins can be found in both areas is due to reasons that match their lifestyles. They can be found in deep waters and are nocturnal hunters, hunting food such as small fish, squid, and shrimp. On the other hand, they also enjoy staying in the calm, clear shallow bay areas. The reason for this because its like their safe space. Here, they socialize with each other, rest, and nurture their young ones. They also go here as it is a beneficial territory for them, as it allows them to watch for predators.

Top Locations to Find Dolphins

There are a lot of locations that follow the habitat conditions above, where many local dolphin species take refuge. The main area to find dolphins in Oahu is the Waianae coast. The Waianae coastline, which is the west side of Oahu, is home to many dolphins and marine life! The Waianae coastline is around an hour away from Waikiki, which is the hub for all the tourism in Oahu. It spans almost the entirety of the west side of Oahu, home to a more rural side of Hawaii. Not only is Waianae home to many local dolphins, but there is a multitude of other marine life that lives there. Some of these include Hawaiian monk seals, different types of local fish, and even humpback whales during the winter season!

Another notable area of Oahu where you can see dolphins is the south shore of Oahu and the tourism hub of Hawaii, Waikiki. Many visitors, when visiting Oahu, often go dolphin watching in Waikiki as it is conveniently close. But the big downside with this is that there are way fewer wild dolphins roaming around in the Waikiki area. This drastically decreases the chances of visitors seeing wild dolphins up close. It is an overall good choice if you are on a time crunch and do not mind taking the risk, but Waianae has a lot of good benefits, while having a longer commute is the only downside.

Tips for observation

Depending on the time of day and the season, dolphins are more likely to be seen. Since dolphins like to hunt at night, they come closer to the bay areas of Oahu during the day. They also enjoy areas where the sea is calm, and the area has a warmer temperature. Knowing this, when it comes to the specific seasons, they are more active during April through May and August through November. This does not mean they are not active year-round, as they absolutely are. But during these times, are when your chances of seeing wild dolphins in the oceans and bays of Hawaii are highest.

There is another step that can be taken to exponentially increase your chances of seeing wild dolphins in Hawaiian waters. This is to join a local dolphin watching tour, such as our own Dolphins and You: dolphin watching and snorkeling tour! By doing so, you gain the opportunity to be brought out into the middle of the ocean and watch wild dolphins from a distance. Things to Bring

On top of these tips, there are tools and other resources you can use to enhance your viewing experience. One of these things is using a pair of binoculars to view the wild dolphins from a further distance. It might also be in your best interest to be prepared for the sun. You can do this by wearing light, breathable clothing, with a hat and sunscreen. And if you do join a local dolphin-watching tour, such as our own, it is highly recommended to be prepared for seasickness, as you never know whether you will be affected until you set foot on the boat.
