Will My Oahu Dolphin Tour Run if It Rains? Weather Policy and Cancellation Guide
Rain is one of the most common concerns visitors have before a dolphin tour. If you are staying in Waikiki and you wake up to clouds or drizzle on the morning of your tour, it is natural to wonder whether the day is going to work out. Here is what you actually need to know.
Oahu weather: what visitors often get wrong
Oahu’s weather does not behave the way most visitors expect. The island’s mountain ranges create distinct microclimates across different regions, which means that rain in one area does not indicate rain island-wide. A shower that moves through Waikiki in the morning can be entirely absent on the west side of the island at the same time.
On Oahu, rain also tends to pass quickly. A shower that looks persistent from a hotel window often clears within 20 to 30 minutes. The sky that looks grey at 6 AM frequently looks entirely different by 8 AM when the tour departs.
West Oahu is sunnier than you think
The Dolphins and You tour departs from Waianae Harbor on Oahu’s west coast, not from Waikiki. The west coast of Oahu is consistently one of the sunniest parts of the island. It sits in the rain shadow of the Waianae Mountain Range, which means that weather systems that bring rain to Honolulu and Waikiki frequently do not reach the west side at all.
It is genuinely common for guests to be picked up in Waikiki under cloudy skies and arrive at Waianae Harbor to bright sunshine and calm water. If you are looking out your hotel window at Waikiki weather and drawing conclusions about what the west coast looks like, you are likely looking at the wrong data.
When does a tour get canceled?
The decision to cancel a tour rests entirely with the boat captain, and it is based on real-time conditions: radar, wind speeds, and wave heights at the departure point, not the general island forecast.
Dolphins and You tours operate in light rain, overcast skies, and mild wind. A little drizzle does not stop the tour, and many guests find that cooler, overcast mornings on the water are actually more comfortable than full sun. The captain cancels only when conditions on the water are genuinely unsafe, such as high winds, rough seas, or lightning.
What happens if the tour is canceled?
If the captain determines that conditions are unsafe, Dolphins and You will contact you directly. Depending on timing, that call may come the evening before your tour or early on the morning of departure.
When a tour is canceled by Dolphins and You, you will be offered two options: reschedule your tour for another available date, or receive a full refund. The process is handled by our team, and you do not need to initiate anything on your end.
Should you cancel yourself if it looks rainy in Waikiki?
Please wait for us to contact you before making any decisions about your booking.
Guests occasionally cancel their own tour when they see rain in Waikiki, not realizing that the west coast is clear, or that a passing shower is about to move through. If you cancel your booking within 48 hours of your tour start time, the standard cancellation policy applies and a refund is not available.
If conditions require a cancellation, we will reach out to you. Until you hear from us, your tour is running as planned.
Trip protection: the flexible option
If you would prefer more flexibility regardless of the weather, Dolphins and You offers an optional trip protection add-on at the time of booking. Trip protection costs 10% of the tour price and allows you to cancel or reschedule your tour for any reason up to one hour before departure, with a full refund.
Trip protection covers any situation: weather concerns, illness, a change in travel plans, or anything else that comes up. It is particularly useful for visitors who are booking well in advance, traveling during winter months when conditions are less predictable, or who simply want the peace of mind of knowing their booking is fully flexible.
Trip protection can be added when you book your tour. When the checkbox in the Trip Protection section is selected, an additional 10% of the tour price will be added.
