Dolphin Fun Facts Vol. 2: Dive Deeper Into the World of Dolphins

Dolphins are beloved for their intelligence, agility, and charm. But there’s still so much to learn about these fascinating marine mammals! If you missed part one, be sure to check out our first set of amazing dolphin facts.

Here’s part two of our dolphin trivia series, featuring five more incredible insights into the world of these extraordinary creatures.

1. Dolphins Belong to the Same Family as Whales and Orcas

Dolphins are part of the cetacean order, which includes whales and porpoises. They belong to the suborder Odontoceti (toothed whales), making them relatives of orcas and sperm whales.

2. There Are Pink Dolphins in the Amazon River

Did you know that some dolphins are pink? The Amazon river dolphin, also called the boto, is born gray and turns pink as it matures. These unique creatures are considered a symbol of good luck in local folklore.

3. Dolphins Are Born Tail-First

Unlike most mammals, dolphins give birth tail-first. A dolphin’s pregnancy can last between 9 and 17 months, depending on the species. After birth, dolphin mothers are extremely attentive, helping their calves reach the surface for their first breath.

4. Dolphins Have Few Natural Predators

Dolphins face few natural threats in the wild. However, human activities such as pollution, fishing, and habitat destruction have become significant dangers. For instance, the Yangtze River dolphin was declared “functionally extinct” in 2006 due to these impacts.

5. Dolphins Breathe Through a Blowhole, Not Their Mouth

Unlike land mammals, dolphins use a blowhole on the top of their heads to breathe. This adaptation allows them to eat without the risk of inhaling water, a vital trait for life in the ocean.
